A young girl sits and shivers. Shaking with fear, she sits and waits for the darkness to engulf her. Fear entraps her mind. The fear of knowing what was to come, was just as bad as the darkness in which filled her being. Feeling it near, she cowers, holding her breath as the darkness inched closer towards her. Eyes squinted shut, filled with an indescribable fear and frozen in terror, the blackness overtakes the young slave, beginning its search for the Apostle Paul.
“Once when we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling. This girl followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, ‘These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved.’ She kept this up for many days. Finally, Paul became so troubled that he turned around and said to the spirit, ‘In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!’ At that moment the spirit left her.” (Acts 16:16-18)
Society is obsessed with darkness. I have yet to understand the desire to see darkness such as movies with zombies, ghosts, spirits, torture, decay, vampires, or witches. The Lord Jesus Christ said, “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness.” (Matthew 6:22-23)
I know of individuals petrified of the dark. These fearful people cannot sleep, dreams full of awful images, and lay in fear as the sun goes down. I often wonder or ask the question, “What are you watching?” Allowing our children to watch “horror” movies because parents think its funny to see their children scream or hide in terror only to reject them from their bedroom at night in annoyance is absurd. Why would we allow such innocence to see such un-holiness and awaken fears that could have been avoided?
Standing in line, waiting to pay for our movie tickets, two young girls approached me. “Would you buy our movie tickets?” they innocently asked.
“Which movie are you seeing?” I inquisitively responded. “Chain Saw Massacre 3.” They replied matter-of-factly. “No.” I smiled. I do not understand why someone would spend money to see other people cut up with a chain saw? I cannot understand why people will watch zombies or the living dead walk around killing people? What is the draw?
I do understand the inquisitive nature of psychics and mediums. I have paid money to hear my “fortune” be told and not once. I was so desperate to know why I was depressed, what was going to happen to me in the future, and was willing to seek our “worldly knowledge”. Leviticus 19:31 states, “Do not turn to mediums or seek out spirits, for you will be defiled by them. I am the Lord your God.”
God confirms there are individual’s who are mediums and psychics, but as Christians and His people, we are NOT to seek them out. If God confirms they are real and we are not to seek their advice, then where are they getting their advice from? As Paul rebuked the demonic spirit from the girl, these “spirits” many speak of are darkness, not light.
You may question this statement, “But Nicole, these spirits seem to know so much and give comfort to those of us living who just need one more chance to speak our loved ones.” Woman, if someone has passed in to the presence of Christ or has passed on to the presence of darkness what do you think the first words out of the spirit’s mouth would be? Listen to the words of Christ, “There was a rich man who dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.
The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried in hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far way, with Lazarus by his side. So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’
But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, now he is comforted here and you are in agony. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over there to us.’
He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father’s house, for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.
Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’
‘No father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’
He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead,’” (Luke 16:19-31).
At the birth of Christ, the angels could not contain themselves. “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in clothes and lying in a manger. Suddenly, a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom His favor rests’” (Luke 2:11-14)
If Christ’s birth on this Earth erupted Heaven in glorious praise to God, then how much more praise is in Heaven now that He sits at the right hand of the Father. The angel’s will always praise His name, not come down from Heaven to give you a word from a dead soul. If Christ said a dead soul had the words of Moses and now we have His words we can search to find needed answers, allowing NOT the dead man to go to his family and plead with them, why would Jesus allow this to happen today when clearly His Word tells us NO!
These mediums and psychics we pay money to go and see are not speaking through Christ or any heavenly angels. If Satan can find a way to distract you, keep you occupied on “worldly” things and not Christ, then his job is complete. As you can see in the Bible, God said NOT to seek out these mediums for He is NOT talking through them; Christ said the dead do not go back to comfort or plead with the living, we have His Word to seek that comfort.
I pray this is making sense to you. Woman, you may disagree, but I encourage you to seek out Scripture that delves deeper into this issue. Darkness will always lead to more darkness and deception. 1 John 4:1-3 encourages Christians to test every “spirit” that comes to them, “Do not believer every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God. Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.”
For those who pray for “light”, I would encourage you to pray for Christ, “And no wonder, Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.” (2 Corinthians 11:14-15)
Pray and fast, seeking the Lord’s advice, and NOT the “world’s”. Pray to the Lord about what you consider good, but may be darkness. Fight the flesh when your mind responds with, “Well, everyone else is doing it.” Christ proclaimed, “Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven. But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven. Do not suppose I have come to bring peace to the Earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.” (Matthew 10:32-24) Fight this spiritual battle with the sword of Christ, the words in Scripture. Let us lay this at the cross and seek God’s wisdom.
Let us pray out loud and CONFESS the Word of the Living God; a prayer to reveal deception and darkness
I do not want to be deceived, nor do I want to fall victim to Satan’s plots. If I am watching, doing, participating, and spending the money You have given me on such things, reveal this to my spirit. I do not want to have darkness in my life, but the very essence of Christ.
Thank You for Truth. Thank You for Your death on the cross, Your pure, holy, and blameless blood spilt for me. I want to keep my eyes on things above and prepare my heart daily to follow You. I know I was dead in my transgression and sins, in which I used to live, when I followed the ways of the world and the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.
I know I have lived among them at one time gratifying the cravings of my flesh and mind and following its desires and thoughts. Because of Your great love for me, Christ made me alive to Him when I was dead in my own transgressions; it is by grace I have been saved. (Ephesians 2:1-5) Father, I pray to not be deceived by the “angel of light”, but test every spirit to see if it if from you (2 Corinthians 11:14-15, 1 John 4:1-3). I pray to be unashamed in the world so you will be unashamed of me before God. Give me the strength I need to proclaim Truth and fight the good fight of faith. Remind me to put on the full armor of God each and every day, so when the day of evil comes, I may be able to stand my ground (Ephesians 6:13) I praise You Lord for Your mercy and love. In the name of Jesus of Nazareth I pray, amen.
